Singing is great fun and we’re always on the lookout for new members! Any boy over the age of six can join, and we have boys from all over Nottingham and the surrounding areas. Ed Sheeran was a choir boy, so why not you?

When and where

The choir practices every Wednesday evening, term time only, between 5.45pm and 6.15pm for probationers (ie. the boys who are starting out), and between 6.15pm and 8pm for the main choir, with the ‘Deeper Voices’ section joining in at 7:30. There’s a 15 minute break for drinks, snacks and playing, usually around 7:15pm – younger boys can leave at this point (or at any later point) if 8pm is too late for them. (Advanced probationers may be allowed to stay for the first half an hour of the main choir’s rehearsal.)

Our current rehearsal venue is Daybrook Baptist Church, Mansfield Road, Daybrook (near Arnold), Nottingham, NG5 6AA, which we are pleased with as it combines nice acoustics with a warm internal temperature, a combination not often seen with churches and rehearsal spaces. It’s just across the road from Madford Retail Park, where the Daybrook Homebase is located. If you’re interested, why not pop along sometime? You can just sit down on a pew and listen to us practicing if you like, or feel free to join in and sing along with us. You’ll be made to feel welcome, without any pressure.

Boys – what you can expect

No audition is required – new boys join the ‘Probationers’ section and are taught to sing by Mr Burton the Choirmaster. When a probationer is ready they move up to the main choir. (If you’re coming from another multi-part choir then most likely you won’t spend very long in the probationers’ section.)

As a Probationer you’ll learn how to read musical notes, how to use your voice to sing well, and you’ll learn how to work with the other boys in the choir. You’ll be given your own red NBC sweatshirt to wear at rehearsals and a bag with the NBC logo on to keep your music in, so right from the start you’ll feel like you belong to the choir.

You and the other probationers will practice once a week, on Wednesday evenings. The main choir rehearses on Wednesdays too, after your practice, and once you’re in the main choir you’ll sing in lots of performances, appear on recordings on the webpage, maybe appear on CDs, perhaps even do a solo or two, but you will definitely make lots of new mates.

Our Musical Director Mr Burton teaches you – and the other lads will give you a hand at first so don’t worry. We sing all sorts of songs, not just classical, but pop too (recently we’ve done songs by Bruno Mars, R. Kelly, Snow Patrol, Coldplay and The Beatles), and fun songs from musicals, such as our recent summer concert where did a lot of songs from the musical Oliver!

We do other things too, like bowling, Laserquest and pantomime visits, as well as football every time we take a break at rehearsal! We’ve been to the Climbing Centre in Nottingham and the ‘Magna’ Science Centre in Sheffield. Sometimes we get invited to sing in concerts quite far away too, which is cool. See what the boys say about being in the choir.

So why don’t you get in touch? We’d love to meet you.

Teenagers and men wanted for the ‘Deeper Voices’ section

Older boys whose voices have broken are also welcome to join our ‘Deeper Voices’ section, who practise from 7:30 to 8:30pm on the Wednesday (the first half an hour of which is with the boys).

Men are also wanted for this section. We certainly don’t mind if you’re in another choir or two.

The Deeper Voices section features alto, tenor and bass parts, so whatever your range, there’ll be a part for you. Please get in touch if you are interested.
